“Asturias, the journey of a song” presents a triple journey, emotional, geographical and musical based on the success achieved, over five decades, by Víctor Manuel's composition on a poem by Pedro Garfias. Nowadays it has become the unofficial anthem of Asturias, its verses awaken emotion and solidarity today, but few know the socio-political background that is hidden behind it or the long road that the Asturian singer-songwriter took to see his song chanted by thousands of souls in the stadiums.
Produced by TPA, “Asturias, the journey of a song” is directed by Jose Braña and Chus Neira, the tandem that has already signed two reference documentaries about music in Asturias for the network, such as “The Electric Years” (2006) and “First we take Milan” (2016), dedicated to the history of contemporary popular music in the region and the birth of the Asturian indie scene in the nineties, respectively.
The protagonists of this new work are Víctor Manuel himself, narrator of the historical adventures of the poem and the song, and the producer Paco Loco, “man of the South” from his studios in Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz) where the song was recorded. version with musical direction by Joaquín Pascual. The musicians invited to re-record “Asturias” and reflect on what a song can mean for a territory complete different generations and styles within the scene closest to the tradition renewed from the author song. Thus, the trip brings together the veteran Chus Pedro (“Nuberu”) with his countrywoman Marisa Valle Roso on the road. Feel the post-rock duo “LR” formed by Leticia Baselgas and Rubén Bada with singer-songwriter Nacho Vegas. Each one of them will contribute a different sensitivity and perspective on this journey from Asturias to Cádiz and which also passes through Mexico, where Garfias went into exile and died and where Víctor Manuel learned about the poem. The documentary goes into the process of reconstructing an anthem like this song and witnesses the recording live, from the first rehearsals to Víctor Manuel's arrival at the studio to complete the version.
