In the midst of the Civil War, the Castilian-Andalusian poet Pedro Garfias wrote an urgent poem from the front upon learning that Asturias had just fallen into the hands of Franco's army. Three decades later, a young Víctor Manuel learned those verses from the Asturian exile in Mexico and put them to music, with similar urgency, giving shape to a beautiful song that has ended up becoming the unofficial anthem of Asturias.
The documentary “ Asturias, the journey of a song ”, produced by Television of the Principality of Asturias (TPA), explores the genesis of the text and the song and accompanies five Asturian musicians on a trip to that South where the words of Hooks to recreate the composition with Víctor Manuel himself. The Gijón producer and national indie pope Paco Loco, Joaquín Pascual (“Surfin Bichos”), Chus Pedro (“Nuberu”), the singer-songwriter Nacho Vegas, the singer Marisa Valle Roso and the post-folk duo “LR”, formed by Leticia Baselgas and Rubén Bada star in the film, a mix of “road-movie” and “rockumentary” that travels to the center of the emotional and musical core of the Asturian land.
“The Journey of a Song” narrates the day-to-day recording, in Paco Loco 's Puerto de Santa María studios, of the new version of “ Asturias ” and recovers the entire story behind the poem and the song.
The new version of “Asturias” has been presented in the form of a video clip that has served, in turn, to inaugurate the HD broadcasts of the Principality of Asturias Television in February 2024.
